Earl Richard Ballenger, a cherished son, brother, and friend, passed away on May 15, 2025, at Mount Carmel East Hospital, leaving a profound impact on all who knew him. Born on January 14, 1948, in Columbus, Ohio, Earl was the beloved son of Charles and Rena Ballenger.
Earl's journey through life began with a strong foundation of education and community. He graduated from London High School in 1966, where he made lasting memories as a band member and contributed his time by running the scoreboard for the high school football team at Von Kanel Field along side his father. His strong work ethic was evident as he held various positions throughout his life, notably at Bal's Carryout, Ranco in Plain City and Columbus, and as circulation manager at The Madison Press. Earl later served as the Clerk of Courts for Madison County Municipal Court before concluding his career with a long tenure at LOCI.
A proud member of the London Masonic Lodge, Earl cherished the ties he formed there, holding many officer positions and becoming an integral part of the community. His passion for history, particularly regarding London and Madison County, was evident through his contributions to historical Facebook pages and local newspapers. Earl's legacy of sharing knowledge and love for history extended to his involvement with the London Archaeological Society, where he made friends and shared unforgettable moments. Earl was a two time author and was working on his third book.
Earl's neighbors became a second family, consistently looking out for him, reflecting the deep bonds of community that he nurtured throughout his life. He is survived by his siblings: Lillian (Joe) Dewitt, David (Cindy Brooks) Ballenger, and Pam (Dennis) Cutlip; his dear Aunt Marilyn Ballenger; four nieces and nephews; and his best friend and devoted caregiver, Clark Marshall. Earl was preceded in death by his beloved parents and many family and friends, all of whom he holds dear in memory.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Earl’s memory to the Phi Beta Psi Sorority Iota, 1325 E Choctaw Dr, London, OH 43140, to support cancer research—a cause important to Earl and his loved ones.
Funeral services for Earl will include a graveside service, details of which will be announced in the near future.
