With heavy hearts, we announce that on September 1, 2025, Herman A. Owens, age 86, of London, Ohio, passed away at home after a long battle with COPD and diabetes.
He was born on December 20, 1938, in Russel County, Virginia to Charlie and Dora (Richardson) Owens. He was the last survivor of 13 siblings.
Herman worked in construction as a foreman and heavy equipment operator over a span of 50 years. He tried to retire multiple times but was so good at his job that his boss, Wilbur, kept asking him to come back. Only back issues finally (and reluctantly) kept him from returning to work in his late 70’s. He was involved with church activities for most of his life and even helped to build a skating rink for his church, where he would skate around in a gorilla costume to entertain the families during special events. He loved to tell jokes, show off his card tricks, and play practical jokes to make people laugh. If you knew him well, you could not escape meeting his pet mongoose or his baby rattlers. In recent years, he enjoyed spending time with his family watching old westerns, putting together jigsaw puzzles, or just telling stories of the past and his life.
He was predeceased by his 12 siblings; son Chris Albert Owens; first wife Virginia (Greene) Owens; and second wife Claris (Hawkins) Owens.
He is survived by his daughter Lisa (Steve) Forder of Grove City, Ohio; son Brian (Stephanie) Owens of The Villages, Florida; granddaughters Misty Ferguson and Tiffany Cochran; great-granddaughters Shiana Cochran and Rasheeda Ferguson; and great-great-grandson Jacob Smiley.
