It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jimmy Lee Smith, who left this world on June 20, 2026, at the age of 86. Born on April 28, 1940, in Springfield, Ohio, he was the beloved son of Walter and Velera (Hoffman) Smith.
A proud graduate of Southeastern High School in 1958, Jimmy pursued a career in medicine with passion and dedication. Jimmy attended the Mercy Hospital School of Medical Technology receiving his Medical Technology degree, he then furthered his studies at Miami University in Pre Med. In October 1961, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, proudly serving his country and spending time in France.
Jimmy's professional journey was marked by his entrepreneurial spirit and devotion to healthcare, as he founded numerous medical laboratories, including Salem Medical Lab in Ohio and Englewood Medical Lab in Florida. He later established C.A.T.S Lab, which he sold to LabCorp, continuing his impactful work until his retirement. Yet, retirement did not slow Jimmy down. He found joy in driving a school bus, icing cookies for cousins at Schulers Bakery, and spending his winters in Florida. His life was a vibrant tapestry of interests: he was an avid organ player, a skilled golfer, a passionate fisherman, and a dedicated hunter. He could always be found cheering on his beloved Ohio State Buckeyes and Cincinnati Reds, as well as supporting Southeastern Men's and Women's basketball teams. Most importantly, Jimmy enjoyed attending his grandchildrens events, creating lasting memories filled with love and laughter.
Jimmy leaves behind his devoted wife of nearly 65 years, Sally (Sallettes) Smith, who will forever cherish their life together. He is lovingly remembered by his children: Dr. Eric Smith, Brian (Valerie) Smith, and Kelly (Tim) Kuhn, as well as his dear siblings, Timothy (Marilyn) Smith and Rita (Steve) Getz. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Ashlee (Chris) Saunders, Michael (Emilie) Smith, Kevin (Valerie) Smith, Kyle (Reilly) Smith, Zachary (Logan) Smith, Ross Kuhn, Hayden (fiancé Adi) Kuhn, Liam Kuhn, and Zoe Kuhn, along with great-grandchildren Rylee and Hudson Saunders, Madeline and Elijah Smith, and Weston and Declan Smith. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends who hold him dear.
Jimmy is preceded in death by his parents and his beloved daughter-in-law, Julia Smith.
The family invites friends to gather in memory of Jimmy at St. Patrick Parish Center, located at 61 South Union Street, London, Ohio 43140. Friends may call on Saturday, June 27, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by a funeral mass at 11:00 AM. Interment will take place at Rose Hill Cemetery.
