John Wesley Toops Sr.

John Wesley Toops, 84, passed away on January 7, 2024, at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Springfield, surrounded by his wife and children on his 84th Birthday. He was born January 7, 1940, the son of Wesley and Ethel (Bowsher) Toops.

John was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He worked on the Bob Stewart Farm, McCords, and retired from LCI in 1978. Due to his retirement, John was able to spend an abundance of his time with his family. One of John’s biggest pride and joys in his life were his grandchildren. John spent his years chasing grandchildren from ballfields, the fair, school performances, graduations, and weddings. His constant jokes, stories, and ornery antics were always a crowd pleaser and a favorite of his grandchildren. John loved to tell a good story and anyone who met him was lucky to hear one from him. John shared a common love of food, especially being known for his favorites: Rice Krispie Treats, Cheese, and other fun snacks: which led him to be known as the “Snack King”.

John is survived by his wife of 64 years: Thelma ((Green) Toops; daughters: Teresa Wickline, Brenda Toops, Karen (Brian Downing) Toops- Ruggles; son: Mark (Andrea) Toops; daughter in law: Marianne Toops; grandchildren: Venesa (James) Gribble, Shawn Long, Ashley Toops, Melissa (Brian) Kunk, Nelson Wickline, Derrick (Chelsea) Toops, Zachary ( Emily) Ruggles, Brooke (Kyle) Stevens, Matt (Alyssa) Toops, Mallory Toops, Lindsay Toops, and Logan Toops, 16 great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; son: John Wesley Toops Jr.; brothers: Weldon (Grace) Toops, Alvin (Anna Lou) Toops, Roy Toops, Raymond (Lois) Toops, and Bill Toops; sister: Helen (Elmer) Dixon and Margaret Moore; son in law: Thomas Wickline; sister-in-law: Pam Chenos; parents in law: Alvin and Norma Green.

The family invites friends to call at the Lynch Family Funeral Home, 124 E. High St., London, January 10, 2024, from 2p to 4pm and 6pm to 8pm, there will be a one-hour visitation from 10am- 11am, Thursday, January 11, 2024, immediately following, the funeral service will begin at 11am, with Pastor Virgil Elwood Green officiating. Interment will follow at Paint Township Cemetery, London.

The family would like to thank all the staff that took tremendous care of John at the Good Shepherd Village.
