Marion "Steve" Coy Obituary

Marion Stephenson "Steve" Coy, 88, of Fairfield Glade, Tennessee passed away on Thanksgiving evening, November 23, 2023.

Born to Marion and Beulah (Callison) Coy on March 15, 1935, in Springfield, Ohio, Steve was dearly loved and respected as a friend, neighbor, and co-worker, and was a valued member of the communities he lived in. He was preceded in death most recently by his wife Shirley (Staggs) Coy last September.

Steve was an accomplished athlete during his school years, excelling in basketball, football, and track at Northwestern High School in the North Hampton/Lawrenceville area. He had a deep love for the outdoors and enjoyed fishing and, as a young man, hunting, and trapping. Steve started working on a neighbor's farm at the age of 9 and sold produce door-to-door in Springfield. At the age of 10, he drove a horse and mule team to plow fields and mow hay. As a teen Steve worked on farms and in construction during the summers. He became a skilled brick mason and, later in life, had to give away his tools to discourage friends from enlisting him in weekend projects. He went to work in Springfield for Columbia Gas Company in 1959 and in 1979 became the London Area Manager. He retired as the company’s Economic Development Consultant after 35 years of service.

After retiring to Fairfield Glade, TN Steve worked at the Dartmoor Marina for another 28 years. He was recognized as an exceptional employee with an incredible work ethic and high standards of service. He enjoyed taking customers on pontoon boat tours of the lake. Steve continued to ride his motorcycle to work through his last season in 2023.

In North Hampton, OH Steve was a Township Trustee and volunteer firefighter, the President of the Springfield Lions Club, and later the London Area Chamber of Commerce. He participated in countless church initiatives. He led youth groups, served on business advisory boards, and volunteered with charitable organizations like the United Way and Rotary as well as being a generous lifelong donor to veteran’s and children’s charities. He was a long-time NRA member. Steve loved to golf, play poker, and shared love for the dogs he and Shirley adopted throughout their life together.

In later years, Steve and Shirley were dedicated members of the Crab Orchard Christian Church.

Steve is survived by his sons, Jeff (Maryann Willson) Coy of North Fayston, VT, Noel (Debbie) Coy of Georgetown, KY, and Craig Coy of Ashland City, TN, and beloved granddaughter Kallie (Kyle) Wakeman of Perry, OH. Steve is also survived by his nieces Tracy (Dana) Rector, Kim (Monte) Rickard, Natalie (Paul) Hilbert, of Springfield, OH, and nephew Matt (Michelle) Warren of Great Meadows, N.J.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his high school sweetheart and mother of Jeff and Noel, Carol (Barger) Coy, his sister Beth Warren, and his nephew Teddy Rector, who was like a fourth son to him. Steve lost the love of his life and wife of 49 years, Craig’s mother Shirley in 2022.
