Stephen Garrett Baynes, 54, was born August 16, 1968, in Madison County, Ohio. He died suddenly at his home in Merion Village, Columbus, after a long battle with COPD on July 6, 2023.
He enjoyed 4-H, raising, and showing lambs for the Madison County Fair and attending 4-H camp at Camp Clifton. A 1987 graduate of Madison-Plains High School, Stephen was a member of the marching & concert bands and wrestling team. After graduation, he attended Urbana University where he became interested in theater acting. Later, he participated in plays with the Rosebriar Shakespeare Theater Company.
Stephen was a kind and gentle person who loved animals. He liked to read, watch movies and his favorite comics were Calvin & Hobbs and The Far Side. He had a quick wit and good sense of humor. Other than offending drivers, he never said a bad word about anyone. He quickly wished friends & family well and acknowledged holidays and special occasions on Facebook. He arrived early to every appointment and was always the first to appear at every family get-together. He had worked as a landscaper, raising, planting, and caring for the flowers on the State Fairgrounds. He liked to attend fairs and festivals and enjoyed gaming at Scioto Downs. Stephen liked to travel and had fond memories of a trip to The British Isles with his father.
He is survived by his parents, Jerry & Pat Baynes of Mt. Sterling; sisters and brothers-in-law, Laura & Steve Clemans (Xenia, OH) and Christy & Jeff Jones (Wesley Chapel, FL). Nephews & nieces, Nathan & Emily Clemans (Springboro, OH) Shannan Clemans (Dayton, OH), Jordan Jones (Mt. Airy, NC) and Alyssa Jones (Wesley Chapel, FL).
